PUPPY’S FIRST TRIP TO PADDLES

It was Puppy’s first time to Paddles. We arrived

within five minutes of each other and she was

standing with friends near the entrance at the bar.

I offered to show her around the place and hooded

her with an airline pillowcase. She could only see

where the lights were – not very helpful in a low

lit club with many dark corners. I led her around

to the various stations and guided her hands so

Q. I’m sure I’ve asked this before but can’t

find the answer. For soaking/care of canes is

mineral oil or linseed oil best or is there an

alternative?

A. I have been very lucky to be mentored by

Last weekend, I went down to New Orleans for the

LLC board meeting. Oh my, New Orleans is just such

a party town. Luckily, the board got all its business

done on Saturday during the day, so that left us lots

of time to have fun. We did a lot of drinking and

eating. I had beignets for the first time

We also had a chance to meet with the LLC local

organizing committee, both in a formal meeting and at

a BBQ hosted by RampartDom. They have a lot of

Q. I’ve got this friend. She’s interested in

submission but she has this problem…she can’t handle

smells. I don’t mean ‘could you bathe once a week,

Peggy aka O came to NYC to visit. We went to a meet & greet for Eden Safarty, the new Executive Director for NCSF. He brought along his three partners – he’s poly!

She also made a leg of lamb. It was sheer slop. When she asked Neptune how he liked the meal, he did not want to contradict his Master. He explained to her that slave standards were different from the rest of the world, and as a slave, he would say that it was very good. We both had a laugh at how he had squirmed his way out of that one. But, alas, I deemed it slop and caned her butt as punishment. She will be given another opportunity to try again.

Greg Ammell passed away Saturday night while vacationing in San Juan, Puerto Rico. BOOK REVIEW: KISS OF FIRE

Ever since Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs were used to help justify the defunding of the National Endowment of the Arts, there has been a question whether sadomasochism is a fit subject for art. Barbara Nitke answers with a resounding YES! in her new book, Kiss of Fire. With over 60 crisp duotone photographs and published on heavy stock by Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg in Germany, Nitke presents a world of sadomasochism that few will ever see.

Nitke’s photographs can be shocking at times in their frankness. A bound man cries out in pleasure and agony as another man behind him, naked to the waist, plays upon his body. A pale woman is seated on a toilet, vulnerable and timid, with all of her attention focused on the woman leaning over her. An ordinary couple stand in the classic “American Gothic” pose in front of an ordinary house, yet the woman is naked and heavily pregnant.

Each of Nitke’s photographs is attuned to the interplay between the partners and the love that manifests even in the most extreme sexual encounters. Their interaction feels spontaneous; a charged moment frozen in time. Yet each scene is framed in a gently formal composition that makes even the most outrageous accruements seem beautiful.

In Kiss of Fire, Nitke writes of her experience exploring the SM community and her increasing desire to photograph the lovers she saw. “I loved watching them float around together at parties,” Nitke says, “Flying on their endorphins, lost in each other. I loved the ones who would spend days cooking up intricate, delicious scenes to tantalize the other and then tell you about it afterwards like mischievous kids.”

In Kiss of Fire, Nitke has captured the intense energy of these couples’ passion as well as the deep intimacy and trust that is required to engage in SM. For anyone who has ever wanted a deeper look into the glorious contradictions of kinky sexuality, Kiss of Fire is a must for you.

LOLITA DOES HOT SUNNY FLORIDA

On Saturday, Peggy aka O and I headed from Ft

Lauderdale to Ft Myers to go to the Ft Myers Munch.

First we went to dinner. This was a bit confusing to

me, because I thought a munch was when you sat

down to a meal in a restaurant and socialized, but

not this munch… OK, we had dinner and I got my

first taste of alligator tail. Yum!

The Munch was held at a nightclub. Admission was

$15 per person and open only to those on a guest

list which listed screen names only. The bar was

very nice and clean with lots of candles and tables

to socialize. Two vendors had spread out there

wares on the pool tables. Three or four pieces of

equipment were set up on the dance floor and a

magnanimous buffet was laid out. It got pretty

crowded and we headed outside to the back patio.

A cross was set up for play but people were using it.

What the hell, we don’t need no stinking equipment!

Peggy stepped up to the wooden fence.

The scene started off very typically for us, but it

perplexed Peggy’s friend. I flog her and we chat.

We talk about all sorts of stuff through the warm-up.

This rattled Peggy’s friend. It’s not really “how it’s

done.” Not that I care how it’s done. Peggy and I

have been playing 7 years and it works for us. It just

doesn’t seem sexy to an onlooker.

Once our scene gets going, Peggy will shut up and

I will lay into her with the floggers. I switched to my

single tail. Peggy and I used to do practice scenes

with my single tail. We hadn’t done a practice session

in over two years, maybe three. She would wear a

corset and drape a towel around her neck and I would

try new strokes on her back. Well, for the last year or

two, I have been practicing an overhand stroke but

never used it on anybody. That night I tried on Peggy.

It was pretty intense. She reacted to it like it was

intense but then gave me the thumbs up. This gave

me a lot of confidence and I lashed her again and again.

Finally, I told her to count out three more for me. 1. 2.

3.

I grabbed her and got her off. It happened so fast –

she was so ready. Our favorite aftercare for that

scene is for me to spray her with alcohol and then set

it on fire several times.

The next morning, we met up with the munch folks

for breakfast (a $5 buffet) and then headed back to

Ft Lauderdale. We dropped in to visit Pup and we all

skinny-dipped in the pool. Lawrence stopped by and

swam, too. Then we headed over to Club Kink where

I presented on Fantasies & Role Play for SPICE.

Monday was my day with Pup. Pup is a plant freak.

His backyard looks like a botanical garden. We went to

a nursery to spend a gift certificate from his brother.

Then we went and bought potting soil at Home Depot.

Bear can’t understand why Pup buys expensive dirt and

has put a moratorium on buying any more plants, but I

think he secretly loves the garden.

A little while back, I started my 100 Divas Project to

IMsL AND IMsBB 2003

Leather and International Ms Bootblack weekend in

Omaha, Nebraska last weekend and wrote this

report.]

Friday night was the basket auction and drawing for

my headshaving fundraiser. The bootblack contestants

raised approximately $2,200 and the IMsL contestants

raised approximately $1800! The grand total for my

headshaving fundraiser was $1,100 (with $550 being

donated to the American diabetes Association in honor

of my oldest son, slaveboi eddie and my club brother

Lou). Thank you to everyone who contributed!!

I asked Leigha Fleming, of NCSF, a friend, and also

one of the judges for the weekend to draw (also,

she didn’t want me to shave my head, so she didn’t

have a ticket in there). She was dressed as an

adorable schoolgirl. That should have been the first

sign of danger. The second was when she drew the

name out, started saying “nonononononono!” and

ate the ticket. I chased her down and stuck my fingers

in her mouth (not smart on my part, since she bit me,

and I had to call her a bitch, but I got the paper back).

The winner was Sarah Humble. I couldn’t believe it.

Leigha was very upset that her Daddy won… for about

10 minutes.. then when the hair started coming off, she

was making suggestions, like “let’s leave those curls at

her ears.”

I’d said that if someone AT the contest won the drawing

and wanted to do the shaving that night, I’d wear

whatever was done to my head on stage for my stepdown

during the contest on Saturday. I had no idea Leigha

would be so evil. They left me with curls. Or as Richie,

IMrBB03, said, “tendrils” at my ears and forehead. Sarah,

Leigha, Amy Marie and I’m pretty sure a couple others

were given turns with the clippers. It ended up being a

group effort, right in the bar. I’ve been promised pictures.

Saturday night, in my pvc vinyl catsuit, shaved head,

glammed up eyes, and “tendrils,” I looked like a being

from another planet. All in all, it was another great IMsL

and I had a really good time.

I taught a class Saturday morning called “Taking it

Back” for survivors of abuse, taking the power back

and making it hot again. It was at 10am, so not too

many showed up, but those that did all made a point

to say something to me over the weekend, to thank me

for taking the time to have a class like that. It meant so

much! That’s what makes a class like that worthwhile 🙂

I was also Leigha’s demo bottom for her class “So you

want me to let you breathe?” Needless to say, I was

toast when I headed back over to the bootblack area

to see if things were going smoothly. Ian (Bootblack

Toronto 2002) and Richie (IMrBB03) were handling the

volunteer table wonderfully. I’d staffed it some Friday

and lined up volunteers to sell travel fund pins (thanks

to the volunteers!!!!!) It was great to have Ian and

Richie to take over when I had other responsibilities

on Saturday.

There were some really great contestants this year,

for both contests. Tammie Nelson, sponsored by Great

Lakes Leather Alliance won IMsL and slaveboi eddie

(my first runner up from last year) won IMsBB! At the

press conference Sunday morning (I was honestly

sneaking away for a nap and got pulled in, but I’m

glad I was there) I heard Tammie say that she felt

the titles were equal and if you asked her to an event,

she’d love to come, please send her and eddie a ticket.

I loved hearing that! The bonding between the

contestants this year was just amazing. Every

bootblack, Katie from Philly, eddie from LA, joe from

Toronto and ember from NLA Dallas, was not only a

good black, but a nice person. That counts big in my

book. I didn’t get to spend quite as much time with

the IMsL contestants, though they seemed just as

great.

There was a mix up in bootblack envelopes and 1st

runner up got switched around. boi joe, Mr. Leatherman

Toronto Bootblack was announced as 1st runner up.

boi joe stood up at the victory brunch, with great

dignity, and explained the situation, and awarded the

medallion to Katie. It was a bittersweet moment. I was

happy for Katie and felt bad for joe, yet joe handled

herself with such decorum and eloquence, I had nothing

but admiration for her. It was explained that Pat Ballie

had simply mixed up contestant numbers. I was very

proud of how joe and Katie handled themselves and

the situation. At the end of the victory brunch, we took

pictures on the stairs with all the bootblacks there..

THUNDER

Neptune and I had an awesome trip to Denver. We

got in Thursday and went downtown for dinner at The

Buckhorn Exchange with FifthAngel, Leslie and T. This

was our splurge meal for the weekend. We ate Rocky

Mountain oysters, rattlesnake dip, buffalo steak, yak,

elk, quail and more. Yum!

We woke up at 4am and left the hotel at 5am and

headed out to Red Rocks where we climbed up and

off the trail to a spot that seemed very close to

Heaven. As Leslie and I sat on a rock with the sun

in our faces and the wind at our backs, FifthAngel

and Neptune went into the field to do a ritual. Don’t

ask me what that was about. I saw it, but did not

understand what was going on. And that’s okay.

When they were through, I did my own little ritual

with Neptune and peed on him. We then headed

out to Denny’s for a hearty breakfast.

In the afternoon, Neptune accompanied Mommy Cara

to pick up Mr Dawson at the airport. They dressed

alike: black boots, blue jeans and those little navy

blue NYPD tanks. It is cool to have someone in service

to you but when there are two of them and they are

dressed alike, it is so much more impressive.

Rich Dockter, the owner of Thunder, spoke at the

Meet & Greet. He explained how he did outreach to

the Denver Police and then at the last minute found

out that the hotel was in Aurora County! Oops!

After meeting with the local police, he explained to

us that the most vulnerable area was the lobby with

its bar, restaurant and liquor license. He asked us to

“behave like we were in church” and not grope each

other in the lobby. He then introduced the presenters.

Thunder totally blows me away because it has such

an amazing line-up of presenters. And I still can’t

believe I am one of them. Wow!

We then went to play in the dungeon. I had a date

with T who is somebody I have been playing with

since the 2nd Thunder in 1999. She had mentioned

something about her crotch and my singletail. I

expanded on that to include inner thighs plus a lot of

other toys as well. Fun! Then I gave Neptune his

first cutting. It was not too deep and, a week later,

it is totally healed and gone. But, nonetheless, it was

still intense and he cried a little bit. Opening skin

brings out emotions.

On Saturday morning I taught my “Kidz Rule: Age

Play For Consenting Adults” class. It was a lot

different than last year because we had arts & crafts

during the lecture. There were many more kidz

acting out and it was pretty wild. We also practiced

our songs for the big show on Saturday night. About

a dozen of us got up in front of everybody (!) and

sang our songs. We were a hit! Everybody laughed

and applauded.

I saw two other workshops: Fred Katz teaching

Extreme Rope Bondage and Master Skip’s Cathartic

Flogging. Fred understands bondage for bondage

sake and I really like that. He taught us that

restraining a bottom’s hands behind their back first

puts them into a submissive headspace quickly. He

showed us how to add rope to immobilize the bottom.

He added more rope because, as he explained,

bottoms just love more rope. BTW Fred prefers

unfinished (scratchy!) hemp rope.

Master Skip is a great presenter. He is very

organized and prepared and he really breaks down

the concept of what he is teaching into understandable

points: intention, surrender and focus. Technique is

not so important. Later that night, in the dungeon,

Peggy aka O and I co-topped Blue. While we did not

exactly follow all of Master Skip’s guidelines, the scene

definitely was cathartic. We beat the crap out of Blue

and he broke and cried. We canceled our other play

date for that evening and went up to the room for

some aftercare.

On Sunday morning, Neptune and I taught

Relationships From Scratch and then hurried back to

the room to get ready for The Ritual with Fakir Musafar

and Cleo Dubois. I going to write about that for next

week’s P+P as I am still processing that.

On Sunday night, we went to the Thunder

Afterparty in a warehouse that was very hot and

sweaty. Damn, I love bottoming to impact in hot and

sweaty warehouses! Alas, I was already committed

to top. FifthAngel and I were co-topping O.

Co-topping? More like running interference! –

NEWS FROM LEATHER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, INC.

In an election concluded on June 15, three

incumbent LLC, Inc. board members were

re-elected and two new members elected to the

nine-member board. Re-elected were Libby Warren

of Boston, Lolita Wolf of New York and Cynthia Wright

of Los Angeles. New board members chosen are Jack

Rinella, a Leather author and educator from Chicago,

and Michelle Sigler, a Leather activist from Oklahoma

City. New board terms began July 1.

During the annual meeting of the LLC board of

directors coinciding with this year’s LLC in Boston

April 11-13, the board’s current officers were r

e-elected. They are; Cynthia Wright of Los Angeles,

Chairman of the Board of the Leather Leadership

Conference, Inc.; Glenda Rider of Baltimore,

Vice-Chair; Lolita Wolf of New York, Treasurer; and

Graylin Thornton of San Diego, Secretary.

Also during the annual board meeting the LLC board

formalized an agreement to hold LLCVIII in New

Orleans, the first time a Leather Leadership

Conference will be held in a southern city. Dates for

LLCVIII will be April 2-4, 2004, and the host hotel

will be the New Orleans Airport Hilton. LLC board

member Alan Maclachlan was named as liaison to the

New Orleans organizing committee, which is headed

by Timm Holt, an officer of the Lords of Leather, and

Ted Carter, an officer of New Orleans Bondage &

Leather Enthusiasts (N.O.B.L.E.) New Orleans’

winning bid was supported by sixteen clubs across

the Gulf Coast region from Texas to Florida. The New

Orleans committee expects to announce the theme

for LLCVIII and submit a request for proposals for

presentations for LLCVIII by late August.

NCSF SUMMER MEDIA SUMMARY

It’s been a busy quarter for NCSF’s Media committee!

We celebrated the arrival of our new Executive Director,

Eden Sarfaty, and the launch of our new and improved

website: www.ncsfreedom.org. NCSF also released

our updated brochure prominently featuring our

constituencies — the SM-leather-fetish, swing and

polyamory communities. In addition, the Media

committee kicked off our featured “NCSF Profile”

covering a key NCSF staffer every quarter. The

current NCSF Profile is an interview with Leigha

Fleming who served as NCSF’s Interim Executive

Director and continues to serve as Director of

Constituency Services.

Throughout this quarter, NCSF continued to help

individuals, local communities and organizations who

became the target of media inquiries. The Colorado

SM community was featured nationally in the media

when the Labyrinth was closed down due to zoning

issues, and Tribal Fire in Oklahoma was again

targeted by religious extremists who took out ads in

the local papers denouncing the event. In all, NCSF

Spokesperson Susan Wright and Swing Spokesperson

Sue Gould gave over 20 interviews with the media on

the rights of adults to practice consensual sexual

expression.

NCSF was also pleased to herald the recent Supreme

Court’s decision overturning sodomy laws in the U.S.

This should have a huge impact on all Americans in the

affirmation of our right to privacy!

This year’s Leather Family Day at Great Adventure will

be Saturday, August 16th 11AM till…. and it is being

ODE TO MY KID BROTHER

This month is the 7 year anniversary of when Officer

Hogg and I took Sir Phil to the Boston Fetish Flea for the

weekend. Sir Phil was heterosexual, dominant and 19

years old. After we got through with him, …well, let’s

Sue Kaplan passed away Monday, June 7- probably of

a massive heart attack. I met Sue and we spent long

late night hours together while doing volunteer work on

transportation at IML. She was always friendly and had

a good attitude. She sure stuck out at IML: she was

4’10” and used a cane. Sue had also been active with

CDG and the old Leather Rose, council of clubs and SLUTS.

A graveside burial service will be held on Friday, July 11,

2003 at Noon at Westlawn Cemetary, 7801 W. Montrose.

A memorial service will be held on Monday evening July14

at 7PM at Congregation Or Chadash, 656 W. Barry.

NEW OWNERS FOR INT’L M/s CONTEST

Tom Stice has announced the transfer of ownership of

The International Master/Slave contest to Mark Frazier

and International Master/Slave 2001 Jim and marsha.

Mark, Master Jim and slave marsha produced last year’s

THE MYTHS OF DOMINANCE PART 2

Myth No. 2 – Knowing How to Dominate is Innate

How many times have we heard a Dominant proclaim

that they are a “natural” dominant or that they were

“born this way”? Certainly the predisposition may have

been there from an early age. However just because

someone has a preference to be in charge does not mean

they are automatically good at it. If one looks at people

who are viewed by those around them as good leaders

are consistently working on the things that make them

that way. The reason we refer to leadership skills is

because effective leadership does require specific skills.

People, as a general rule, don’t follow along just because.

People are inspired to follow someone. They follow because

they usually have goals they want to obtain and they feel

the leader in question can get them there. They trust their

well being to that leader because something in that leader

has inspired that trust. Dominants need to remember that

the people who follow them don’t have to – they choose to.

The trust in a leader is a fragile thing. It is dynamic and

the inspiration needs to continue. If a submissive loses

trust in the Dominant’s ability to lead effectively, the

relationship is in serious jeopardy. As submissives

occasionally point out, they don’t need a Dominant to

make crappy decisions for them – they are perfectly

capable of doing that on their own. The reason for

having a leader it that they are able to take you

somewhere you aren’t able to go on your own.

Everyone at some point in their life has probably had a

boss or someone in some leadership position that they

have looked up to as someone who is a good leader.

What makes someone a good leader, a benevolent

autocrat that inspires others to move heaven and earth

for them? What skills do we look for when we are

looking for a good Ds relationship leader? What tools

can someone use to be an effective leader?

Skills

Skill #1 – Honesty

People may be surprised to find that honesty is a skill,

however the ability to communicate with someone in an

honest manner, particularly if the message is an

unpleasant one is not particularly innate. There is a

human tendency to not want to tell people things that

will produce a negative reaction. One of the main

justifications one hears for dishonesty is that the person

doing the lying did not want to hurt the other person with

the truth. Although there are exceptions, for the most

part this is self-serving in that the bad new deliver really

does not want to have to face the consequences and

negative reaction of the other person. However, those

who are in search of a leader generally do not consider

people who have trouble dealing with others around

unpleasantness as good prospects for the position. A

leader is generally viewed as someone who can deliver

bad news honestly, deal with the fallout, and move on.

Skill #2 – Consistency

Nothing is more frustrating for those following than to

have a leader who changes course on a whim. Good

leaders are seen as people who have a plan, have

mapped out a course and follow through on it, making

adjustments on the way as necessary, but not changing

their minds in a seemingly random manner. For someone

in relationship with a Dominant, it is important to be able

to rely on the Dominant’s reaction to specific behaviors

and activities and it is important to be able to anticipate

to a certain extent. If the Dominant is erratic, it reduces

the effectiveness of their leadership. Those who follow

them are not able to trust in the vision the Dominant has

because the Dominant themselves have trouble

translating their vision into reality. For Ds relationships

where discipline and punishment are part of the mix,

consistency becomes particularly important. Trust can be

seriously damaged by a Dominant whose pattern of

being punishing happens, for example to track to the

level of stress they are having at the workplace.

Consistency in behavior and enforcement of rules creates

trust and a certain level of predictability at the core.

Skill #3 – Clarity

If the people around you frequently misunderstand or

misinterpret what you’re saying, chances are that they’re

not stupid, but rather that your communication style is

ineffective. When giving instructions, it helps to make a

mental outline of what you want to communicate – key

points and clear descriptions of specific tasks to be

performed. This is important particularly if tasks need to

be completed in a certain order. In developing clear

communication styles, it can help to put things in writing

first before sitting down and talking about them. This gives

structure to the discussion and is a way of ensuring that

nothing is left out. Again, clear, understandable behavior

and communication goes a long way in getting people to

follow. Be clear, then get out of the way.

Skill #4 – Communication

Communication of goals, ideas and method are important

to effective leadership. Although, as with anything, there

are exceptions, most people like to know why they are doing

something, how decisions will impact them and they like to

be part of the decision making process, even if they are not

making the final decision. If there is communication and

participation, even if the decision turns out to be a poor

one, everyone has ownership and there won’t be

resentment against the leader for making a unilateral

decision that proved to be stupid. There are Dominants

who feel that communicating with their submissives isn’t

necessary – that the submissive is there to obey and that

understanding goals and reasons isn’t necessary.

However, unless the Dominant makes perfect decisions

every time, the effect of pure unilateral, unaided decision

making is that, not only is the Dominant not making use

of all assets and information available, but each bad

decision erodes the trust of submissive in the leadership

skills of the Dominant.

Skill #5 – Patience

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither is a relationship.

People, Dominants and submissives alike have bad days.

They make bad decisions. They exercise poor judgment.

They get cranky. Life gets in the way. Learning to roll with

the punches and not get mired in details are generally

considered skills that good leaders have honed. When

things go askew, clarity of communication, refocusing on

end goals and being consistent in dealing with the

situation will help provide ongoing trust in the leader’s

capabilities.

Skill #6 – Ability to see a Global Perspective

As pointed out earlier, people follow because they believe

the leader has the ability to get them somewhere they do

not feel they can go on their own. In order to be able to

do this, a leader needs to take into account, not only their

own perspective and needs, but the perspective and needs

of those around them. Although submissives sometimes

declare that they only want what their Dominant wants,

the reality of humans is that everyone has individual

needs and desires. Altruism has limits. Although people

can subjugate their needs to another, basic human

psychology dictates that, at some point the person will

want their own needs met. If someone sees their leader

making decisions with apparent disregard for the effect it

will have on those under their command, their desire to

follow will disintegrate. This is readily apparent if one looks

at military hierarchy – leaders who have lost the faith of

their followers, particularly in times of war, frequently end

up deposed, circumvented or even dead. Sometimes

Dominants fall into the ego trap of doing something

“because they can”. However because one can doesn’t

make something a good idea.

All of these skills are things that can be worked on and

refined. Although some people are born with these skills

as part of their personality, most people have to work on

them. The people who we generally identify as good

leaders have these skills. Those are the people that

inspire others to follow them – in short they are the ones

who are good Dominants in the long run.

RAIN – BLECH!

I had a great weekend in spite of the rain. Naught

Nancy was in town and did a great workshop at LSM on

Shaving. I am now inspired to buy a straight edge razor.

Neptune thinks I should try to shave a balloon first, but

Nancy said that was a waste and she never did that.

Be afraid, Neptune! The next day, in spite of the rain,

we went motorcycling around Red Hook with Nancy.

Neptune has his license but is still a beginner and will

be until he gets his own bike. We got very wet but

stripped off our clothes and threw them in the dryer.

The rain cleared up for the first half of Folsom but it all

shut down early. I packed up a soggy NCSF outreach

table and headed out to Chinese.

SOME THOUGHTS ON THE POLITICS & ETHICS OF OUTING

I was a little surprised at the recent outrage at the

P&P for revealing the dirty little secrets of a certain

investigative reporter, and toward me for having the

audacity to suggest wider distribution of that account

in a post to sm-act. “An act of terrorism!” declared one

pseudonymous poster. I feel no vested interest in

outing said reporter, but I am comfortable if others do,

without us going to red alert as a community.

“Outing,” a term coined by Time Magazine in late 1989,

originally meant declaring closeted public figures to be

gay or lesbian, usually for some political purpose.

Hypocrisy was always the rationale for outing.

Outing has always been controversial, and by definition,

non-consensual. It played an important role in the

guerilla politics of the early 1990s and was aimed mostly

towards closeted elected officials who voted against AIDS

funding and/or LGBT initiatives by day, while carousing

gay bars by night.

Nowadays, the expression has been watered-down

and mainstreamed to mean revealing just about anything

without the written consent of the subject – what simply

used to be called gossip. (i.e. She was outed as a Ben

and Jerry’s addict.)

I don’t believe in the politics of personal destruction. I

don’t think the private should become public as a matter

of anger, spite, or revenge. But if you’re a public figure

who denounces, derides, or votes against that which you

gladly participate in privately, I will support the exposure

of your hypocrisy. Period.

Is it “nice”? Of course not, but this isn’t about being

nice. This is about the real world of “fuck with me, and

I’ll fuck with you” and I think there are plenty of

circumstances that arise to that threshold. But for me

the math is simple: public figure + hypocrisy = candidate

for outing.

Maybe I’m more comfortable with the idea then some

because as a gay man I have had more opportunities to

be outraged at self-righteous, duplicitous hypocrites.

Maybe I delight in a little Schadenfreude. Maybe it’s

simply the right thing to do.

I don’t believe there will ever be consensus on the issue.

Regardless, outing – whether it’s the revelation that

morals czar Bill Bennett is a degenerate gambler or that

monogamy maven Andrew Sullivan is trolling for group

sex on the Internet – is here to stay.

NCSF APPLAUDS US SUPREME COURT RULING ON TEXAS

SODOMY LAW

The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom applauds the

U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the Texas

sodomy law. The justices voted 6-3 to overturn their

1986 decision on Bowers v Hardwick (GA), stating that

the sodomy law is an unconstitutional invasion of privacy

and that by singling out gay people, it violates the

Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the

law.

NCSF believes, as the court held today, that state

sodomy laws violate the fundamental privacy rights of

adults in the U.S. These intrusive sodomy laws regulate

the right of consenting adults to engage in sexual

activities such as oral and anal sex as well as playing

with sex toys in their bedroom or in private venues such

as swing clubs or SM playspaces. Our core constituencies

require the right to privacy and equal protection in order

to be free of discrimination, and because consenting

adults have the fundamental right to express their

private sexuality without government interference.

“The state cannot demean their existence or control

their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a

crime,” Justice Kennedy wrote, according to a report from

The Associated Press.

Of the 13 states with sodomy laws, four — Texas,

Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri — prohibit oral and anal

sex between same-sex couples. The other nine ban

consensual sodomy for everyone: Alabama, Florida, Idaho,

Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina,

Utah and Virginia. Thursday’s ruling apparently invalidates

those laws as well.

“This ruling is a major victory for us all,” stated Eden

Sarfaty, Executive Director of NCSF. “State sodomy laws,

which generally define the act of sodomy as “deviant” sex,

have been on the books of every state as recently as 1960.

Such laws have a significant impact on society in general by

attempting to legislate morality. The U.S. Supreme Court

has sent a strong message today that government has no

right to intrude into our private sexual lives.”

EDEN SAFARTY NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF NCSF

The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) has

named Eden Sarfaty as Executive Director. Sarfaty, a

Washington, DC attorney, is an expert in the area of

legislative and administrative law, with experience in the

management of national associations, lobbying at all

levels of state and federal government, and criminal

defense. He will take the helm from Leigha Fleming,

acting Executive Director, on July 1st, 2003.

“As Executive Director, I look forward to supporting

NCSF’s grassroots mission of advocacy for the

SM-leather-fetish, swing and polyamory communities,”

Sarfaty said. “Our challenges will be to encourage the

energy and focus the resources of our communities to

dispel myths, help get reliable and useful information to

people who need or want it, and to foster the tolerance

and respect that Americans of all kinds so rightly value.”

“Eden is a proven leader and manager with experience

in running national organizations,” stated Vivienne

Kramer, Chairperson of NCSF. “These are qualities that

NCSF needs at this period in our growth. The Board of

Directors’ Search Committee conducted an objective

screening process and interviewed a diverse group of

strong candidates who were eager to work with NCSF.

We chose Eden because of his outstanding skills,

enthusiasm and dedication to fighting for the sexual

freedom of consenting adults.”

NCSF thanks Judy Guerin and Richard Cunningham for

their generous gift to fund the salary of NCSF’s new

executive director for the following six months. With this

donation, Guerin, former Executive Director for NCSF

(1999-2002), continues to demonstrate her long-standing

commitment to NCSF and the alternative sexuality

communities. “Without Judy’s assistance, we would not be

where we are today,” said Kramer.

“I’m delighted that Eden Sarfaty will be coming on

board!” stated Leigha Fleming. “While I’ve been pleased

that I could serve as Interim Executive Director, I’m even

more pleased that I’ll now be able to return my full

attention and focus to the development of NCSF’s

constituency services. We have new programs ready for

release and will be doing national staff training in August.

gratified that our we’re seeing greater utilization of our

MS WORLD LEATHER

The third annual Ms World Leather competition will be

held in Dallas TX on the weekend of August 8-10, 2003.

The event starts on Friday August 8 with the meet and

greet at The Dallas Eagle. The event continues on

Saturday with the beginning of the judging. Registrants

of the judging as the judges are seeing it. The weekend

culminates on Sunday with the main event taking place

Q & A OF THE WEEK

A. I am sure you do not remember me, we have

met a couple times, most recently at BR, and I am

interested to hear a bit more about the “coloring books”

you bought at IML, as I am currently waiting for my “little

girl” to move here with me, and as she was not able to

LEATHER PRIDE NIGHT

Leather Pride Night happened Saturday night in the

elegant Puck Building. Twelve diverse groups came

together to work and put this event on and it was

fabulous. Everyone was there! I worked with Andrew

to coordinate the volunteers. Over 150 people

volunteered along with 50 presenters and about 30

staff. It takes a lot of people to make this event h

appen and every one of them is important and

appreciated.

I bought $40 worth of raffles tickets from Puppy, who

wore a Mr S butt plug puppy tail which wagged every

time she moved. $10 is supposed to be crotch to floor.

Puppy somehow had me bosom to floor around the

ankles and back up again. I won three raffle prizes: a

couples membership to TES which I will give to Neptune,

a subscription to The Leather Journal which I will use to

renew my subscription and a Shotgun video. It just

proves that you have to be in it to win it.

I browsed the flea market and found Carol Queen’s

Exhibitionism For The Shy and a book from 1981,

“Fantoccini: A Little Book Of Memories” by Kirby

Congdon. Then I also grabbed a barefoot bondage

magazine from the 70’s. I presented that to Boymeat

who looked at it real quick and said, “Thanks, I can

jerk off to that.”

The auction seemed to go really fast this year and I

missed some items that were of interest to me. Other

items just went for too much money. I did manage to

snag a poster for Charles Gatewood’s Dances Sacred

and Profane with Fakir on it, a perfed leather hood by

Leather Creations, a pair of house seats for Thoroughly

Modern Millie and two hours of dungeon time at Arena.

So I really did score.

NELS/b CONTEST

On Friday night, Neptune, Bridgett and I attended the

Northeast LeatherSir and boy contest at The Slide Bar

down on the Bowery. We had dinner first at one of my

favorite restaurants, Marion’s. Apparently, The Slide

and Marion’s are owned by the same person.

There was a nice turnout for a NYC contest and the

venue was the perfect size. There were not many

contestants. andy fischman of New York City was the

only boy contestant and he was judged on points with

a high enough score to be the winner. Two contestants

ran for the LeatherSir title: Bob Forbes of Syracuse and

Drew Kramer of Jersey City. Bob Forbes was the winner.

One thing that I thought was really cool is the

presentation of gift certificates from The Leather Man to

Coyote (NELS 2002) and Rob Hargrave (NELb 2002).

The previous producer (Davian) disappeared with the

prizes and the proceeds of the 2002 contest and gave

them no support. This was a nice consolation prize a

year later.

So this creep named Grant Stoddard, posing as a

novice, signs up for Leather Retreat and gets a ride to

camp with Boymeat. Boymeat, being the friendly and
