Sweet potatoes with marshmallows seem so very Thanksgiving, so American. Being American is very important to me. I am first generation American, the child of immigrants.

My mother would never make that dish. She made sweet potatoes, but topping it with marshmallows was inappropriate. Even when other family members would host Thanksgiving, nobody made that dish. I wanted it.

When I became an adult, I would always offer to cook a dish or two but my family always turned me down. So I would bring bunches of flowers, commandeer the biggest vases and make flower arrangements.

Now, this year I have been relegated to black sheep status and am going to a friend’s home for Thanksgiving. I am expected to make a dish and bring it. We spoke by phone and my friend told me what people had already committed to bringing. I saw my chance. “I’ll bring sweet potatoes with marshmallows!”

My friend hesitated oh so slightly and then said, “Yeah, that would be good.”

So, I am excited, happy and thankful that this year there will be sweet potatoes with marshmallows on the table.
