When I was in High School, my boyfriend bought me a necklace with a Star of David. Pretty. Florentine finish. I had never had anything like that before. When my mother saw it, she freaked out and did not want me to wear it. “You don’t want everyone to know that you’re Jewish.” She wanted me to pass, to blend in, to be an American. I don’t think my mother was a self-hating Jew. Paranoid maybe. But, it’s an understandable reaction for someone who grew up in Nazi Germany and was forced to wear a yellow star sewn onto her clothing.
