I have a question that needs to be answered. A friend of mine is going from male to female physically (he was born female in a male's body) and I was wondering what literature I could read online or wherever to be able to know more about the process. He is currently taking hormones and will soon be starting to wear woman's clothing for a year before the surgery is done. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. A. I asked my friend, Lauren who is an MTF herself, to answer this question: I actually would recommend not going to the web as a first resource. There is a lot of transgender/transsexual information out there, for sure, but it can be difficult to find, especially for someone looking for general information. Frankly, there is also a lot of misinformation and downright scary misstatements, too, that could confuse the seeker more then help I suspect. I would recommend the following books instead as a first step, both of which are superb descriptions of the process and what trans folks often face: "True Selves" by Mildred Brown "Confessions of a Gender Defender" by Randi Ettner (my personal favorite). Both books are widely available, either in the library or in bookstores, and both are highly recommended. If someone wants to go the web route first, I would recommend these two sites: www.transsexual.org (not .com! Last time I checked, that was a porn site). This is written from a personal perspective, and has some decent basic information. www.ifge.org. This is the site for the international foundation for gender expression, and they have a decent link section to other resources. My only other piece of advice is that the trans person you know may or may not fit the descriptions of people in the book or on the web.
