I was walking down 23rd Street the other day and saw this box attached to a tree. It was garbage that had been collected from the tree well on two previous dates and then mounted in a butterfly specimen display box.
As we walked down the block we saw that every tree had a box with a little garbage collection in it. And then we came upon a guy who was attaching a box to another tree. I asked him if he was the artist and he told me his name is Mike Knierim and he’s doing a residency this summer at School of Visual Arts and he’s in the MFA program at Northern Illinois University. I told him I would put up a photo in my blog.
The installation was only up for a day. However, garbage in tree wells seems to be a renewable resource here in NYC.
